New Zealand vs Australia

Date: 22 August 2009, Saturday

Time: 10:05 GMT, 06:05 EDT, 2o:05 AEST

Venue: Olympic Stadium, Sydney

All the hype of a Bledisloe Cup match aside, Australia and New Zealand are playing for survival in the TriNations in Saturday's rugby union international at the former Olympic stadium.

The All Blacks have won 10 of the past 12 tests between the countries, and are the defending Bledisloe Cup and TriNations champions.

But they lost two in a row in South Africa after beating the Wallabies in Auckland to open the tournament.

Australia, meanwhile, also lost to the Springboks in South Africa on Aug. 8 and, with a single point from two matches, trail the leading Springboks by 10 points. South Africa's 12 points is eight ahead of New Zealand.

The Wallabies would almost certainly slide out of contention with another loss, while the All Blacks would find it difficult to come back after three straight losses to challenge South Africa's early dominance of the tournament.

The Wallabies have one thing in their favor - they've won three of the past four tests in Sydney, including a 34-19 victory over New Zealand last year in Kiwi Robbie Deans' first Bledisloe Cup match as coach of Australia.

All Blacks assistant coach Wayne Smith is wary, despite the All Blacks' 22-16 win over Australia at Auckland last month.

"They gave us a hiding here last year, that's all I know," Smith told New Zealand Press Association on Thursday.

"They've got 11 of those players fronting and they've got a big one (flanker Rocky Elsom) back.

"Sometimes the test has turned on a little thing. I wouldn't think it's psychological, it's just the way the games have gone.

"It's going to be another close one."

If the All Blacks win, they'll retain the Bledisloe Cup with two matches to spare.

"It's a big game for us, there's no hiding from that," Smith said. "In terms of the Tri-Nations, one of us is going to be out.

"We talk about Bledisloe Cup too because it's a huge trophy for us but we think highly of the TriNations too. That's important to us and you don't want to give that up lightly."

Star flyhalf Daniel Carter will return for the All Blacks, his first test of the season after rupturing his Achilles tendon in January.

Carter has only played one club game and three matches for his Canterbury province leading into his 60th test appearance, and 14th against Australia.

Teams :

Australia: James O'Connor, Lachie Turner, Adam Ashley-Cooper, Berrick Barnes, Drew Mitchell, Matt Giteau, Luke Burgess; Richard Brown, George Smith (captain), Rocky Elsom, Nathan Sharpe, James Horwill, Al Baxter, Stephen Moore, Benn Robinson.

Reserves: Tatafu Polota-Nau, Ben Alexander, Dean Mumm, David Pocock, Will Genia, Ryan Cross, Peter Hynes.

New Zealand: Mils Muliaina, Josevata Rokocoko, Conrad Smith, Luke McAlister, Sitiveni Sivivatu, Dan Carter, Jimmy Cowan; Kieran Read, Richie McCaw (captain), Jerome Kaino, Isaac Ross, Brad Thorn, Owen Franks, Andrew Hore, Tony Woodcock.

The Wallabies have named an unchanged starting team to face the Springboks in Cape Town on Saturday.

The only change is that Phil Waugh is dropped for Peter Hynes who comes on to the bench.

Hynes replaces New South Wales flanker Phil Waugh in a straight swap on the bench in order to make a more conventional split among the run on reserves.

The team is otherwise unchanged to the team that lost 16-22 to the All Blacks in Australia’s opening match of the TriNations.

While the Wallabies have not won at Cape Town since 1992, the squad does feature 13 of the players who participated in last year’s 27-15 win over South Africa at Durban.

That success was Australia’s first on South African soil for eight years, and just the second win achieved by the Wallabies in the Republic from 14 attempts since the TriNations kicked off in 1996.

South Africa aim for a home clean-sweep when they tackle Australia in the TriNations on Saturday having comfortably disposed of the All Blacks with back-to-back wins.

But the world champions know that Robbie Deans' side, with fly-half Matt Giteau in prime form, will pose more challenges than New Zealand.

South Africa have leapt to the top of the TriNations table after recording successive wins against the All Blacks, while Australia will go into the game having last played three weeks ago.

Australia team:

Storm vs Cowboys Live Free Video link for PC

CURRENT POS: 4 POINTS: 27

vs

CURRENT POS: 6 POINTS: 24
Storm v Cowboys | Olympic Park, Melbourne | Fri, 7 Aug 2009 19:35

Finals football comes early in Melbourne as two sides who are expected to take part in the post-season battle it out for positions in the top eight.

The Storm may have fallen to the table-topping Dragons last week but they showed enough grit to prove they should still be good enough to nab a position in the top four.

They probably only need one more victory over the final five weeks to ensure a place somewhere in the top eight but Craig Bellamy’s men are after a home final so expect to see them at their best for this blockbuster.

The Cowboys turned around a worrying form line last Friday night to demolish the Titans, pushing them back in to sixth spot and in a good position to consolidate. This game probably represents their last chance to make a push for a top-four berth but is also important as they are already equal on competition points with the eighth-placed sides and just a win in front of the ninth-placed Wests Tigers and 10th-placed Broncos.

While they are unlikely to fall out of the top eight with a loss they could easily drop to eighth and be joined by the above-mentioned clubs.

The home side Storm has lost powerful forward Sika Manu to a season-ending leg injury but thankfully former representative star Ryan Hoffman returns to take his place.

The only other change from last weekend’s tough loss is the return of Adam Blair on the bench in place of Hep Cahill.

The Cowboys have named a few changes to the starting line-up that hit the ground against the Titans – although coach Neil Henry could easily pull the same last-minute changes he did last Friday night.

Anthony Watts has once again been named to start at hooker, which sees Grant Rovelli revert back to five-eighth, Steve Southern move back to lock, while Manase Manuokafoa moves to the bench.

Matt Scott has once again been named to start for Antonio Kaufusi, while Travis Burns has been added as an extra man on the bench.

Watch out Storm:
While the Cowboys’ attacking unit is run by Johnathan Thurston and Matt Bowen, it is the little-known winger John Williams, or the ‘Wolfbrother’, who is making plenty of waves this season.

Williams leads the Cowboys in line breaks with 11 for the season and he is averaging 93 metres a match, even though he isn’t the biggest winger in the competition. He has 10 tries so far and odds are he’ll have more before the season is out.

Speaking of tries, keep an eye on Grant Rovelli and Manase Manuokafoa when they get close to the line. They are the only semi- or regular Cowboys without a try for the year – and time is running out to get off the dreaded doughnut!

Watch out Cowboys: This match shapes as the perfect one for Billy Slater to run amok chasing short kicks for tries.

Slater’s acceleration is hard to contain and he is arguably the competition’s best chaser of chip and grubber kicks, something the Cowboys have trouble defusing. The North Queensland boys are ranked equal last at defusing chip kicks, successfully cleaning up just half of those thrown at them, and second last in the NRL at taking care of grubber kicks.

The good news is they have managed to keep their mistakes away from the try line and are one of the better teams in the NRL at stopping tries from kicks with just 11 against for the year. But defending the Cooper Cronk and Cameron Smith arsenal of short kicks is a whole new predicament.

Where it will be won: This game will come down to the battle of the left-edge attacks and therefore the right-edge defence.

Both sides are hugely successful in attack on their left edge and will continue to attack to their strengths. If you look at a rugby league field from end to end and split it into five areas (left side, left edge, centre, right edge, right side) you can get a feel for where teams are most prolific.

Both the Storm and the Cowboys have scored more tries on the left edge than the other four areas this season. For the Cowboys, they have managed an impressive 26 tries this year on the left edge, a little better than the Storm who have 20 tries. But while the visitors have scored more tries on the left edge than the Storm it is defence in the same area which gives the Melbourne a significant edge.

They have allowed just four tries all year by opposition teams on the left edge (which is up against their right-side defenders) which means the Cowboys’ left-edge attack will need to be at its absolute best to continue their fruitful earnings.

The Cowboys’ defence in the same area has been far from stiff, leaking 20 tries for the season. With this knowledge you can be certain the Storm will send plenty of traffic to the left fringes over and over again.

The History
Played 19; Storm 14, Cowboys 5. The Storm beat North Queensland 26-12 earlier this year in Townsville to make it five straight against Cowboys. The Cowboys are yet to find a way to win at Olympic Park in the six times they have travelled to the Victorian capital.

Conclusion
While the Cowboys showed great form to bust the Titans’ undefeated home streak last week, the Storm were pretty impressive in defeat against the Dragons also.

Melbourne are always a tougher proposition at Olympic Park and will start favourites but if the Cowboys duo of Bowen and Thurston get cranking again they are certainly a chance of an upset win.

Stay with the Storm if you are tipping well but with time running out take a serious look at the Cowboys if you need an upset.

Panthers vs Dragons Live Streaming Rugby Game

CURRENT POS: 5 POINTS: 25

vs

CURRENT POS: 1 POINTS: 34
Panthers v Dragons | CUA Stadium, Penrith | Fri, 7 Aug 2009 19:35

A huge game for both sides, with the table-topping Dragons not wanting to take their foot off the pedal as they cruise towards their first minor premiership since the stand-alone St George side achieved the feat in 1985.

Meanwhile Matthew Elliott’s Panthers can’t afford an exhale just yet – their good form has elevated them to fifth on the NRL ladder on 25 points, but given the eighth-placed Knights are just a point away a defeat could prove catastrophic in their bid for finals football.

The home side have rebounded strongly since their drubbing at the hands of the Rabbitohs in Round 18. They smashed the Raiders, then surprised plenty with a gutsy defeat of the Cowboys in Townsville before steaming home to grab one competition point in a thrilling 32-all draw with the Warriors at CUA Stadium last week.

The fact they trailed the out-of-sorts Warriors 32-6 with 27 minutes remaining is a worry – but the way they blitzed back into the contest can only be a positive as the side has now proven they can overcome extreme adversity. And from that comes confidence.

Importantly, star lock Luke Lewis, sidelined with a broken toe since Round 13, has been named in jersey no.19 and is expected to get good game time subject to a late fitness test.

The Dragons showed their mettle against the Storm last week, overturning a 12-4 scoreline late in the second half to accelerate away from an in-form Melbourne in the second stanza to run out comfortable 26-12 winners.

They’ve now won six in a row and would seem on track for the minor premiership, or at worst, second place after the regular rounds.

They are strengthened for this game with the return from injury of key duo, centre Matt Cooper and lock Jeremy Smith, who help form a six-man bench.

The History
Played 20; Panthers 6, Dragons 14. The Dragons have won six of the past eight including the past five in a row. The Panthers haven’t beaten the Dragons since a nail-biting 13-12 win in Wollongong in 2006. But the Panthers’ record at home is much better, winning 50 per cent of the 10 encounters at CUA Stadium.

Conclusion
Just how much last week’s crucial game took out of the Dragons remains to be seen. There’s no doubt Wayne Bennett’s side lifted a huge gorilla off its back and sometimes the mental letdown that follows can result in an inability to get ‘up’ for the next game. That’s not complacency, but rather an unavoidable aspect of a tough season.

Penrith will prove a formidable opponent for the premiership favourites; they are less structured than other NRL sides but their unpredictability can often pay huge dividends. They need Michael Jennings to get off to a flyer and they need to post points early – if they don’t they won’t be able to chase down the Dragons if their opponents get ahead by 10. Simple as that.

On form it’s hard to go past the Dragons.

Match officials: Referees – Gavin Badger & Ashley Klein; Sideline Officials – Steve Chiddy & Gavin Morris; Video Ref – Steve Clark.

Wests Tigers v Sea Eagles | Sydney Football Stadium | Mon, 3 Aug 2009 19:00
The Wests Tigers taking on Manly promises to be an absolute cracker, so look forward to the end of work on Monday and get out to the game.

Wests Tigers come into the clash off the back of three straight wins, but it can’t stop at that for them. To stay in the race for the top eight they must knock off the defending premiers.

For the majority of the year the Tigers have played without consistency, but the past three weeks they have tightened up their defence and have played with greater discipline.

While Manly look to have pretty much sewn up a top-eight position, they now have a top-four finish on their minds. They have some work to do, with the Titans and Storm looking well entrenched; however as Des Hasler says: “The key is to keep winning.”
The History
Played 12; Wests Tigers 4, Sea Eagles 8. The visitors have defeated the Wests Tigers in their past five meetings.

Conclusion
With both sides possessing some serious attacking weapons this game promises to be highly entertaining. If Tim Sheens’ men can hold up their end of the bargain in defence, they will be more than competitive.

The best thing about this match for Wests Tigers’ fans is that at the end of 80 minutes they will know whether the side deserves to be a top-eight team. If they win it, well, remember what happened in 2005?

Rabbitohs v Bulldogs | ANZ Stadium | Sun, 2 Aug 2009 15:00

Only time will tell if the South Sydney charge towards the top eight will continue but one thing is for sure… if they can manufacture a win against the Bulldogs this Sunday afternoon then they will have a lot more people willing to get on the bandwagon.

While a big win over the Roosters isn’t much to get excited about this season, it did allow the Bunnies to get within just one competition point of the top eight, putting the side now in 10th place and in a position to strike.

The unexpected loss by the Bulldogs at the hands of the Eels also should add confidence to the Rabbitohs, who now have a blueprint to replicate and take down the second-placed blue-and-whites.

However the Bulldogs, who may have let the chance of a minor premiership slip with the loss last week, still have the aim of finishing in the top two to secure not only a home final but a guaranteed second bite of the cherry after Week One of the finals.

Souths have predictably kept the same side from last Monday night’s drubbing of the Roosters, with the only change being the addition of Origin player Michael Crocker on the bench. Crocker is hoping to finally return from injury for this crucial encounter.

The Bulldogs only have a few minor changes themselves with David Stagg back at lock and Jarrad Hickey coming onto the bench.

Daniel Holdsworth and Brad Morrin miss out on the team for this clash.
The History
Played 137; Rabbitohs 62, Bulldogs 71, drawn 4. The Bulldogs took care of the Bunnies 14-12 in the wet earlier this season to make it four wins from the past five clashes between the teams. They have a commanding 6-1 advantage over South Sydney at ANZ Stadium – although the lone South Sydney win at the venue did come just last season.

Conclusion
Sure the Rabbitohs are gathering some momentum and the Bulldogs had a hiccup last week – but you still can’t help but heavily favour the ’Dogs here.

They haven’t lost back-to-back matches all season and they have a much stronger constitution than South Sydney, making them a sturdier choice.

The Rabbitohs have confidence right now, and some flair, but their defence is still far from proven. One gets the feeling the kennel will be serving Rabbit stew come Sunday night.

Sharks v Eels | Toyota Stadium | Sun, 2 Aug 2009 14:00

Just a fortnight ago the Eels were down and out in the race for the 2009 premiership. But now, with two consecutive wins against the Bulldogs and the Storm, their title hopes are still alive. And they are the team with it all to play for in this match.

The Eels are in 12th place on the competition ladder, log-jammed with the other teams fighting to make the eight. The Sharks, on the other hand, have all but forgotten about the 2009 season. For them, the rest of the year is about building towards 2010 and beyond.

Watch out Sharks: Parramatta’s outside backs are ominously hitting form with the finals only a handful of weeks away. In their victories over the Storm and Bulldogs, Jarryd Hayne, Luke Burt and Eric Grothe have been electric – the Sharks will need to be on guard.

Fullback Hayne (19 line breaks, 10 tries, five try assists) has been particularly dangerous, and combined with Burt (seven line breaks, six tries and four try assists) and Grothe (10 line breaks, eight tries and four line-break assists), they form a potent backline.
The History
Played 70; Sharks 37, Eels 33. The Sharks have won the past three clashes, stretching over two years. But the winning margin has never been more than three points (13-10 in 2009, 16-14 in 2008, 25-24 in 2007).

Conclusion
The Eels are on a roll and should have too much to play for in this clash. A Sharks win would be all the more surprising given their last strike weapon Trent Barrett is out for the remainder of the season.

It’s simply a must-win game for the Eels. Bet on them to win this match, but it’s sure to be more than competitive.
