Knights v Roosters | Energy Australia Stadium | Sat, 1 Aug 2009 19:30
The recent announcement of Knights coach Brian Smith signing to take over from Brad Fittler at the Roosters next year has given this game an exciting new twist, especially with Fittler’s volatile claims aimed at Smith this week.

Fittler is of the belief Smith rested stars Jarrod Mullen and Kurt Gidley from last weekend’s match against the Sea Eagles solely so they could be fresh to take on Freddie’s Roosters, as a loss to the tri-colours wouldn’t be so good for the Smith ego.

The Knights’ boss has dismissed the claims but even so it sets up a ding-dong battle in Newcastle come Saturday night.

The Knights are in a must-win position. They are still safely in the top eight at the moment in seventh spot despite the loss to Manly last week but with the chasing pack getting a sniff in recent rounds they cannot afford to let a home match against the last-placed Roosters go to waste.
The History
Played 37; Knights 16, Roosters 19, drawn 2. Newcastle belted the Roosters 38-6 earlier this year in Sydney to make it four wins from the past six games against the tri-colours. But the Roosters have no problems travelling to EnergyAustralia Stadium: they actually hold a 9-6 advantage over the Knights (two matches drawn). In fact, the Knights haven’t beaten the Roosters in Newcastle since a semi-final victory way back in 2001!

Conclusion
You have to tip the Knights here because they are a top-eight side playing at home against the last-placed side – but don’t miss the small sidenote which reads an upset could be possible.

The coaching drama adds a bit of spice and Roosters players all of a sudden have something to prove… not to mention the fact they have had tremendous success at the venue in recent times.

If you watched the Roosters against Souths you would know it is hard to get any sort of buzz going for the tri-colours right now, but stranger things have happened. Tip Newcastle… unless you are desperate.

CURRENT POS: 13 POINTS: 17
Panthers v Warriors | CUA Stadium, Penrith | Sat, 1 Aug 2009 19:30
Do the 2009 Panthers have the instincts to go for the kill when the situation presents itself? We are about to find out.

Penrith have surprised the pundits who were predicting they would fall out of the finals zone before season’s end, moving up to sixth spot in the NRL ladder after beating the Cowboys last week. But it is this match at home that will give a better indication of their desire.

They have the perfect chance here to well and truly kill off one of the contenders, albeit the Warriors are pretty much dead and buried already, in a game they are expected to win.

If they do so, in impressive fashion, then all and sundry will sit up and take notice – despite their injury worries. But if they can’t, and if they allow a struggling Warriors unit to get the better of them, you can expect their premiership odds to drift significantly.

The Warriors pretty much put up the white flag of surrender last weekend with a 29-4 loss to St George Illawarra. They sit in 13th spot on the NRL ladder, five competition points out of eighth place, and while a six-game run would get them to 29 points and give them some hope of qualifying for finals football it is about as likely as Barack Obama offering his job back to George Bush.
Conclusion
Penrith is the sane tip. They have it all to play for and they are at home against a team who have been a major disappointment this season.

The Warriors can be good on their day but they appear to be playing without motivation and this can be a real killer to your chances.

The Panthers should win by 20 – and it’s likely they’ll post at least 40 points on the scoreboard.

Raiders vs Broncos Live Streaming Rugby Video on PC

CURRENT POS: 14 POINTS: 16

CURRENT POS: 9 POINTS: 22
Raiders v Broncos | Canberra Stadium | Sat, 1 Aug 2009 17:30
Last week the Green Machine was spluttering… now it’s broken down. Last week the Broncos were limping… now they are facing the veterinarian’s shielding curtain and a shotgun if they don’t find something fast.

This Saturday-afternoon game pits two struggling sides desperate to get something back into their season.

The Raiders, languishing in 14th position on the ladder, basically lost all hope of a fairytale run to the finals when they were taken apart 25-4 by the Wests Tigers last weekend.

They can still push up to 28 competition points if they remain undefeated for the final six rounds, which might be enough to sneak into the top eight – but the chances of that happening are akin to you winning Lotto and Powerball in the same week.
The History
Played 35; Raiders 14, Broncos 20, drawn 1. Brisbane has won five of the past seven matches between the two teams, although the past five have gone on a win-loss trend which, if it continues, points to a Canberra victory.

In the 16 games played at Canberra Stadium Canberra has won eight, Brisbane seven with one draw. Significantly the Broncos haven’t won in Canberra since 2005.

Conclusion
The enthusiasm of youth will keep the Raiders well in this contest, not to mention the paper-thin Brisbane defence. But the Broncos have made a habit of pulling out of Origin hangovers in the past and usually that happens right about now.

With the big guns coming back into the side Brisbane look much stronger and the Raiders gave us no reason to fear them at home with a lacklustre showing last week. They are by no means out of this, but Brisbane has so much more to play for.

Peter de Villiers' Springboks will be out to secure rare back-to-back victories over New Zealand in Durban on Saturday following their powerful 28-19 victory over the All Blacks in Bloemfontein last time out.

The brutal power of the Springbok pack was highlighted last weekend with a first-half barrage against an All Blacks side that struggled at the lineout and was put on the back-foot by a stunning performance from openside Heinrich Brussow.

With a Test against Australia in Cape Town on August 8, the Boks will fiercely want to secure three wins from their home games before heading out on tour.

Graham Henry will be keenly aware of his side's deficiencies in the set-piece, but has not decided to alter his pack aside from an enforced change at tight-head, where Owen Franks will make his first start in place of the injured Neemia Tialata. Andrew Hore retains his place at hooker despite two wayward performances, while Isaac Ross and Brad Thorn have been tasked with better containing the rampant Victor Matfield and Bakkies Botha.

Brendon Leonard's rusty performance in Bloemfontein has seen Jimmy Cowan recalled to the No.9 jersey, while Stephen Donald starts at fly-half. Donald will have one eye on Dan Carter's return to action with Canterbury this weekend, but will be confident that he can produce the excellent form shown against the Springboks last weekend and the Wallabies in their opening game.

The home side have also been forced in to a change, with fly-half Ruan Pienaar failing to recover from the ankle injury picked up during last weekend's showdown. His place is taken by Morne Steyn, who will be hoping to punish the All Blacks should their indiscipline resurface at Kings Park.

Jean de Villiers was a doubt after limping off at Free State Stadium, but fears over his fitness were allayed when his injury was shown to be cramp. The Munster-bound centre starts alongside last weekend's winning try-scorer Jaque Fourie, and will win his 50th cap. Joining him in achieving this milestone is winger Bryan Habana, who starts in an unchanged back-three alongside Frans Steyn and JP Pietersen.

Reinforcements have arrived on the replacements bench, where both centre Adi Jacobs and lock Andries Bekker are included. Both players will make their first appearances of the Tri-Nations if called upon.

All Black skipper Richie McCaw knows that the pressure is on his stuttering side, but is looking to last weekend's second-half fightback for inspiration. He is expecting his charges to show their resilience back at sea level this weekend.

"Come Monday, we looked at the game and knew we hadn't played as well as we could have," said McCaw. "Now whoever you're playing for, that's bloody disappointing. But here, you expect everyone to perform.

"We made vital mistakes all the way through that never allowed us to really put pressure on the Boks. "When you throw lineouts and penalties into it, they were the things that started to cost us and we just didn't get a roll-on or put any pressure on. There was perhaps a period just before they scored their late try when we really started to get going."

South Africa: Frans Steyn, JP Pietersen, Jaque Fourie, Jean de Villiers, Bryan Habana, Morné Steyn, Fourie du Preez, Tendai Mtawarira, Bismarck du Plessis, John Smit (capt), Bakkies Botha, Victor Matfield, Heinrich Brüssow, Juan Smith, Pierre Spies

Replacements: Chiliboy Ralepelle, Jannie du Plessis, Andries Bekker, Danie Rossouw, Ricky Januarie, Adi Jacobs, Wynand Olivier

New Zealand: Mils Muliaina, Joe Rokocoko, Conrad Smith, Ma'a Nonu, Sitiveni Sivivatu, Stephen Donald, Jimmy Cowan, Tony Woodcock, Andrew Hore, Owen Franks, Brad Thorn, Isaac Ross, Jerome Kaino, Richie McCaw (captain), Rodney So'oialo, Richie McCaw (captain), Jerome Kaino

Match Day: 31 July,2009, Friday
Time: 17:00 GMT, 13:00 EDT, 3:00 AEST
Venue: Loftus Versfeld, Pretoria

The Bulls should take advantage and inflict further pain on the Boland Cavaliers after their 80-7 capitulation to Griquas last week. Frans Ludeke has Pedrie Wannenberg and Deon Stegmann available again and they take a place on the bench with Gerrit-Jan van Velze named in the run-on side. His start is the result of Dewald Potgieter being ruled out for four weeks with a fractured wrist.

The Bulls lost 19-13 to the Sharks last week and are currently fourth on the log, a position they should climb from with an expected win over the Cavaliers.

Blue Bulls team to play the Boland:

Western Province should take the spoils as they host the Platinum Leopards on Friday night. Joe Pietersen starts at fullback for the home side while Gio Aplon starts on the left wing with Tonderai Chavangha on the right - Sireli Naqelevuki is out with injury. Conrad Hoffman gets a rare start in the No. 9 jersey while Duane Vermeulen makes his long-awaited debut on the blindside flank, replacing Pieter Louw.

The aforementioned Watson captains the side while possibly the only man in South Africa rooting for an All Black victory, Chris Jack, starts on the bench, with his spot taken by Hilton Lobberts. In the front row JD Moller gets a start at loosehead prop.

The Leopards will find the going tough in Cape Town and as yet they have yet to register a point in their three games their latest loss seeing them go down 19-40 to the Lions.

Under-pressure Naka Drotske's Cheetahs side host the Sharks in Bloemfontein needing a win to haul themselves from the wrong end of the table after securing just a single point so far this season.

They've lost three games on the bounce and the pressure on Drotske is growing. Springbok Jongi Nokwe is back on the left wing after sitting out last week while Frans Viljoen starts on the flank in for the injured Johan Wessels.

The third-placed Sharks have resisted the temptation to start with their new marquee signing Juan Martin Hernandez. Guy Cronje starts in the flyhalf berth while in further good news for Plumtree, fiery scrum-half Rory Kockott has been cleared to play after being cited and Springbok Waylon Murray makes his long-awaited return from injury.

The Sharks do have a number of injury concerns, though, as Odwa Ndungane, Michael Rhodes and Deon Carstens are also nursing a variety of ailments and might not make Friday's game.

Griquas scrum-half Sarel Pretorius passes the ball, Blue Bulls v Griquas, Loftus Versfeld, Pretoria, South Africa, September 1, 2007

Going into the fourth round of the Currie Cup this weekend not many would have thought that the clash between the competition's top two teams would be Griquas against the Lions.

All of the games take place on Friday, which gives the players the day off to watch the second instalment of the Springboks tackling the All Blacks on Saturday, and in Western Province skipper Luke Watson's case, the opportunity to get married.

So, Griquas will look to keep their winning streak on track when they travel to Ellis Park to tackle the Lions. Dawie Theron's team from Kimberley are fresh off an 80-7 obliteration of Boland in what was a record-equalling performance by the province.

After 11 tries last week and nine conversions from the boot of Naas Olivier, Theron's side will be supremely confident of maintaining their spot at the top of the table.

The Lions have made great strides since Jake White's input as a consultant but will be boosted by the return from injury of their talismanic captain Cobus Grobelaar. They come off a win against the Leopards last week but face significantly tougher opposition in the competition's leading side on Friday.

They've suffered a blow with the news that the hugely impressive scrumhalf Jano Vermaak is to sit out after suffering a concussion last week. His place is taken by Chris Jonck with Freddie van Zyl stepping up onto the bench.

Titans v Cowboys | Skilled Park | Fri, 31 Jul 2009 19:35

Titans’ fans are once again spoiled with a mouth-watering Queensland derby match on what shapes as a sensational Friday night of football for the NRL in the lead-up to the finals.

While top-four combatants St George Illawarra and Melbourne do battle in Sydney, the third-placed Titans put their undefeated home record on the line against the Johnathan Thurston-led Cowboys just a week after they battled and busted Brisbane on the same surface.

The Titans have quietly gone about their business this season and it appears only an absolute catastrophe could see them miss out on an inaugural finals berth. They sit in third place on the NRL ladder after seeing off the Broncos 34-18 last weekend and have designs on a top-four finish and a home final.

Dragons v Storm | WIN Jubilee Stadium | Fri, 31 Jul 2009 19:35

Plenty have declared the Dragons the real deal over the past few weeks as they’ve both methodically and brilliantly disposed of their oppositions on the way to skipping four competition points clear in the race for the minor premiership.

Well, if they can overcome the Storm this week, NRL.com is prepared to jump on the Red V bandwagon too.

It is easily their biggest game of the season: the Storm have proven their bogy side over the past decade, ever since they lost the 1999 grand final through a controversial penalty try. Try as they might, the Storm have mostly had their measure, with the red-and-whites winning just two of the past eight encounters.

The last time they won was a 36-12 victory at ANZ Stadium last year when the Storm were minus eight Origin stars. And in Round 1 this year, in coach Wayne Bennett’s first premiership game at the helm, the Dragons toiled hard for a win but fell short when a Greg Inglis field goal in the 84th minute broke the deadlock.

Rabbitohs v Roosters | ANZ Stadium | Mon, 27 Jul 2009 19:00
Stanley

This will be the 199th time these two bitter rivals come head to head and while the Roosters’ season and week has been full of headlines and their finals hopes are non-existent, you can bet your bottom dollar they will fire up for this clash.

Yes they are done for the year and likely wooden spooners. Yes, their coach, good mate and club legend Brad Fittler has been shown the door at season’s end. And yes they have lost the reliable and inspirational captain Craig Fitzgibbon to injury.

But as South Sydney tries to pull a rabbit out of their hat in a late charge for the finals the Roosters would love nothing more than to pull their pants down and trip them up to quash their dreams.

The tri-colours are still in last place on the ladder, still a win away from the second-last Sharks but a horrible differential puts them effectively a win-and-a-half out of the spoon position.

The Rabbitohs, thanks to a last-up win over Brisbane, have moved up to 10th spot on the ladder and are now just three points from the top eight. Should they manufacture a win here they could quite easily be just one point shy of the finals zone with time up their sleeve to find a way; however a loss could just as easily have them scrambling with the also-rans once more.

Souths coach Jason Taylor has stuck with the side that demolished Brisbane, with the only addition being the return of Michael Crocker on an extended bench.

For the Roosters, Fitzgibbon’s place at lock will be taken by Shane Shackleton who moves from prop while Lopini Paea comes into the front row.

In huge news for the club, Anthony Minichiello returns from his broken ankle to captain the side on the wing, with Sandor Earl making way.

Anthony Cherrington is also out of the side that fell to the Warriors last week, with Sia Soliola and Rohan Ahern coming onto the bench.

Storm v Sharks | Olympic Park, Melbourne | Sat, 25 Jul 2009 19:30

You would think Melbourne have too much to play for in this clash – a top-four finish and much-needed momentum going into the finals just two things that should help propel them to victory. The Sharks, on the other hand, are well out of finals contention and sit at the bottom of the table (just above the Roosters) with 14 points.

But history shows the lads from the Shire rise to the occasion at Olympic Park – their controversial 17-16 victory last year one example – and the Storm should be prepared for one almighty challenge. Last week the reigning premiers, Manly, found that despite the injuries and dramas the Sharks have suffered this year, they’re still giving their all. This might be closer than we think…

Cowboys v Panthers | Dairy Farmers Stadium | Sat, 25 Jul 2009 19:30

Sixth takes on seventh on Saturday night when the Panthers travel north to take on the Cowboys in what shapes as a crucial game for both sides in their run to September.

North Queensland will look to put last Sunday’s disappointing 34-14 loss to the Wests Tigers behind them when they aim for a seventh-straight win at Dairy Farmers. With only two more home games remaining after this week, the two points on offer against the Panthers will be vital in ensuring a top-eight finish.

While the Cowboys hold a handy +94 points differential to lead three other teams from sixth to ninth sitting on 22 points, the Panthers are clinging onto seventh spot with a +18 difference, with Manly and the Broncos just out of the eight.

The Panthers hope they can build on an encouraging 27-14 triumph against the Raiders last Saturday night as they continue to fight without hardened campaigners Petero Civoniceva, Luke Lewis and Frank Pritchard.

It remains to be seen, however, whether the likes of Michael Jennings, Trent Waterhouse and Luke Walsh will be enough to help their team win enough games to claw into the finals.

Bulldogs v Eels | ANZ Stadium | Sat, 25 Jul 2009 17:30

This traditional rivalry will find some fire this time around if Parramatta can continue their improved performances on Saturday.

A few weeks ago we would have predicted a whitewash, but the Eels played one of their best games of the season against the Storm last week. Sure, they were depleted, but Billy Slater and Greg Inglis’ impact were still kept to a minimum.

This week will be much tougher for Parramatta though. The Bulldogs have been outstanding all year and with Ben Hannant returning from injury and Bryson Goodwin from suspension, they are back to full strength.

The Eels are finally finding some continuity and the team they field will be the same as the one that beat Melbourne. However without the motivation of playing for Nathan Hindmarsh, as they did against the Storm for his 250th game, the Eels will need to find something else to play for during the full 80 minutes
